Live Dominance is the first DVD release for hardcore metal crossover pioneers Hatebreed. It hits stores in early September, ironically on the first day of their headlining US tour. The band will be autographing all copies of the DVD sold at these shows. Shot at Harpo’s in Detroit where frontman Jamey Jasta says, “The pits are brutal and hardcore metal roots run deep,” the 2-disc set includes over two hours of live performances from the band’s Supremacy tour as well as plenty of bonus footage including interviews, extra videos, and fan testimonials. Directed by Kevin Custer with musical production being handled by Grammy winner Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God), the film is excellently produced and the sound quality pristine.
This is clearly Hatebreed’s strongest line-up yet, the music is powerful and the live show an intense phenomenon accurately captured in this DVD. Jasta has a larger-than-life personality and his energy is huge. Opening with my personal favorite, “This Is Now,” the crowd response is massive and he engages them with plenty of audience participation. He works them into a frenzy until wall to wall, front to back, the whole floor is one huge pit. I especially loved the overhead mosh coverage. In the midst of this fierce aggression, the thing that captivates me most about Hatebreed is their positive message mixed with brutal music that allows you to channel your aggression into something cathartic. There’s something to be said for a band that recognizes the power of their influence and uses it for something positive.
