Just because Koama’s vocalist and guitarist turned 17 this year, don’t think the band can’t play or aren’t heavier than hell. Front man Tommy Gibbons formed the band at the ripe old age of 11, and by the time he was 13, he was also the lead guitarist for the band Red Headed Stepchylde before their eventual breakup. Don’t let his youth dissuade you from taking a listen to Koama’s newest album Wicked Plague. It’s 12 tracks of progressive death metal that include the guttural growls and pounding guitars and drums you’d expect when you’re ready to thrash. With an album title like Wicked Plague, don’t be surprised to hear themes that encompass those age-old plagues like society, violence and death, including a three part “Trilogy of Torment,” which showcases the band’s immense talent in “Stalking the Abuser,” “End of the Abuser” and “She Met Her Fate” on tracks seven through nine. The album also includes guitar riffs that keep your head moshing and some interesting backup vocals provided by Aaron Carey and Big Tom Gibbons.
