Almost is Nothing - Wings of Deliverance
By Moira K. Wiley

Don’t let the mellow start on track one’s “Descent” fool you, this thrash metal band hailing from Portland knows how to rock. Almost is Nothing jumps right into the mix on track two’s “Gates of Gold” and never lets up. You’ll find yourself headbanging to tracks riddled with soaring guitar solos intertwined with melodious riffs and accompanied by hammering drumbeats to give each tune the kick it needs. To complete the package are screaming lyrics that often flow into a growl, all coming together to form the sound that has local metal fans wanting more. Coming up on their fourth year, the band has branched out to gather even more fans not just in the Portland area, but all around the West Coast. Fully committed to reach metal fans nationwide, bandmates Toby Spellman (vocals), Jeremy Schafer (lead guitar, backup vocals), Aaron McCoy (guitar), Drew Greenly (bass) and Ryan Losli (drums) seem unstoppable.
With influences like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Testament and Motörhead, new listeners are in for a treat when old school metal meets a new school flair. The band may be “new” in the world of music, but Almost is Nothing is no fly-by-night semi-sensation. With their discontentment to sit around and wait for opportunities to come their way, they don’t seem shy about getting out and trying to grab the brass ring; you should be seeing a lot more of this band in the future.
