Edge Set Mary - Vol. II January 2007 Crave Underground Printed Issue
| Edge Set Mary - Vol. II Independent By Ian Boynton
|
As soon as I heard the first track, "White Faucet," I knew that New Orleans' Edge Set Mary was going to be something I could listen to for a long time. The song grabs you as soon as the guitar starts. That's how quick I was hooked on this band. It doesn't let up. The next song, "Cloudface," gave me a feeling of power, but beware, for some it may make you feel like you can kick the shit out of a giant.
Vol. II is Edge Set Mary's second EP release since they formed in 2002. From start to finish, these six songs kick up some serious dust. Songs like "Faith in the Dead Lai" and "Eyelids" are very reminiscent of the early 90's Seattle sound. Then there's the song "Raunch," which starts out with a fade in wah-wah guitar riff that builds into a groove rock song with a bass and drum attack that, as drummer/vocalist Chris Turner says, "Makes the girls bump their stuff." The CD closes with the song "Home," which takes you on a roller-coaster ride, going from a sick jam to a smooth melodic break and back. It leaves you wanting so much more. Vocally, Chris Turner gives these songs the strength of Zakk Wylde and the emotion of Chris Cornell, all while punishing the drum set simultaneously. Guitarist Dall Kammer, bassist Mat Callaway and Chris Turner round out one of the best 3-piece bands I have heard in a long time. If you are in the mood for some great rock and roll, then I highly recommend you check out Louisiana's Edge Set Mary. Their songs will stick in your head like peanut butter.
