Ramblings From The Editor

"We are like the ancient phoenix, a mythical firebird that rises out of the ashes of it's own destruction to recreate itself."

This is without a doubt the hardest piece I have ever written for Crave, and it?s definitely the closest to my heart. After five years and over 100,000 magazines, Crave is taking a well deserved break. In order to explain I have to tell you a story, one that is bittersweet and intensely personal to me. In February, my beautiful friend Pegi Chan was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma, a malignant brain cancer. She lived five months and three days and she was the bravest person I?ve ever known. She met her fate with laughter and a genuine belief in living your life with no regrets. I gave her six months of my life, but in the end, she was the one who saved me. You can't watch someone take their last breath and not have it change you forever. She was a beautiful, radiant soul and her life was so meaningful that it made me see that I was breathing, but I wasn't really alive. Losing her made me realize how much I wanted to LIVE.

In the midst of my grief, and after 20 years in the music business, I walked away from everything in my life, including Crave. Going through this allowed me to see the bigger picture and the things in my life I was neglecting. I was busy all the time and I lived under the constant pressure of deadlines, and everything else in my life was swallowed up. It became this huge obligation that began to overshadow my passion for music; I was beyond burned out. Running a magazine is a 24/7 job. It's not something you can do eight hours a day and go home at night. As hard as it is to walk away from something I love so much, I'm going home to my family now.

My partner Tim got married and had a baby, and on September 11th my beautiful granddaughter Adara Star was given into my care. These new beginnings have altered our lives in many ways and as we changed we decided it was time to do something different. There is no failure here; we will always consider Crave a huge success. We're not giving up, we're just moving on. May this last issue inspire you as it has me, especially the interview with Jamey Jasta, who is no stranger to the ravages of brain cancer after losing friend and manager Steve Richards. Let Rob Bolger from Behind the Suit and Tie enlighten you, and let Eric Spruth?s Sacred Transformations motivate you.

We will continue to run the magazine online and support local, independent, and national music. It is our sincerest hope that we made a difference for both independent musicians and in our local music community. Tim and I will be working on projects in the future together, and you can find Timmy online with his new graphic design business. You might even see my name in print where you least expect it. I'm tired of saying goodbye, so I'm not going to. Please remember these last words from your Editor,

It's better to be known for who you are, than what you do.

I'll see you around,

Robin R. Steeley
